  4. What is an Estate Plan and Why is it Important?

    October 27, 2022, 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
    @
    Bangs Community Center

Attorney Karen Jackson will explain the importance of each document in the basic estate plan: the will, health care proxy, HIPAA release, advance directive, and durable power of attorney. Of these five documents, only the will is needed after a person passes away. The other four documents are used if an individual becomes mentally incompetent. The people named in the various documents will make the important decisions for the person who is no longer able to do so. Without these critical documents, a family member or someone else must petition the court for the appointment of a guardian and/or conservator. These types of court proceedings are expensive, time-consuming, and stressful. As Attorney Jackson goes through each document, she invites questions and gives examples of real situations of what went wrong when these documents were not in place. Attorney Jackson will also provide numerous practical tips, such as when, and when not, to add children to bank accounts.
