The Amherst Fire Department provides comprehensive fire, rescue, EMS, and fire prevention services to the Town of Amherst, including the University of Massachusetts, Amherst College, and Hampshire College, as well as providing the primary EMS service to the neighboring communities of Leverett, Pelham, and Shutesbury.
We also respond mutual aid for fire or EMS to any community in need in the three-county area (Hampshire, Franklin, Hampden Counties).

SMOKE DETECTOR INSPECTIONS (26F):
BURNING PERMITS: Season open now until may 1st
Resumption of In-Home 26F inspections
The Executive Order issued by Governor Charles D. Baker during this COVID-19 pandemic for smoke and CO alarm inspections for the sale and transfer of residential properties has been rescinded with an effective date of July 10, 2020. Buyers who agreed to defer the inspection must have the inspection completed by October 9, 2020.
The Amherst Fire Department will resume 26F inspections on Monday, July 13, 2020. 26F inspections must be scheduled and paid for in advance. The cost of the initial inspection is $50 and we accept checks (preferred) and cash. In the near future, we hope to be able to offer on-line, credit card payments. 26F inspections are normally completed on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1 pm to 3pm.
Due to Covid-19 , visitors are still not allowed into the business office. In the meantime, requests for 26F inspections can be dropped off the locked box attached the outside of the Business Office.

Due to the COVID-19 situation our Fire Stations, including the business office, are closed to all visitors until further notice. This measure is being taken to help protect our personnel from unnecessary exposure to potential illness so that they will be ready to serve the community as needed. Anyone needing to conduct business such as for permits, records, etc., should call our business office (413-259-3082) during normal business hours.
